How Exciting...You're About To Get A New Puppy
Congratulations, You're about to get a new puppy. It's a big step for many people and families. It's not a decision to be made lightly. Researching your breed and breeder are of the utmost importance. Here are some thing I would suggest you do before you make any decisions, and Good Luck To You!
1. Research all you can about different dogs, talk to people that own dogs you like before you make a decision as to which breed you think will be suit your family. Always ask your sources about the pros and cons of the breeds you're interested in.
2. Make sure you speak to the different breeders that have piqued your interest, and it's best to speak to them in person at some point. This person could become your in-law, so to speak, so it's nice if you like them and what they stand for, how they breed, and how they will raise your new puppy.
3. Ask to visit your potential breeders home. You'll want to see and meet as many of their dogs as possible. Look for things like smelliness, cleanliness, unkempt dogs, friendly dogs/or not, and things such as this.
4. Ask what happens if you don't get a puppy from the litter you expected to get it from. My policy is that your name moves in the order it was on the list, to the next litter. That will set you back about 3 to 4 months on the time frame from of getting your puppy. Some breeders only breed bi-yearly, so you my wait longer. Deposits are no longer refundable at Star Australian Shepherds. This has nothing to do with how long my wait list is, as it is always long, at least a litter or two out. The main reason I no longer refund deposits is that a deposit is there to hold a space on my list, a space that someone else could take if you don't. I don't just want A NAME, I want the name of someone that truly wants one of my puppies. I don't want someone on my list that just wants to put their name down on JUST ANY LIST, but they want a STAR PUPPY. I don't want to call up my customer at 6 weeks and either get no answer or get the answer that says, "Oh, I found a puppy closer" and then I refund them a deposit. Obviously they didn't care where they got their deposit, and if the deposit is refundable then why put down a deposit, what's the point?
5. Ask your breeder if she/he will take the puppy back should you fall ill or have some unforeseen situation arise, they should if they are good breeders who care about their dogs.
6. Ask for references if you like, they should be happy to offer you some names and phone numbers.
7. If your gut says anything negative to you about a breeder, just RUN!
